RnB / Neo Soul Guitar Backing Track in Cm
Hey Guys Happy New Year.
In this progression (Cm - F9 - G7 - Fm9 - G7), the Fm9 chord is not part of the diatonic chords in C minor (natural or harmonic minor scale). Instead, it borrows the F major chord from C major, turned it to Fm9, adding a touch of colour and creating an interesting harmonic texture.
Cm (C minor): The tonic chord, establishing C as the tonal center.
F9 (F dominant ninth): This chord is the IV (fourth) chord in the key of C minor. In a typical minor key progression, the IV chord is often a dominant seventh or a variant with added tensions.
G7 (G dominant seventh): The V (fifth) chord in the key of C minor. The dominant seventh (G7) typically creates tension and has a strong tendency to resolve back to the tonic (Cm).
Fm9 (F minor ninth): This chord introduces some chromaticism. It's not uncommon to use borrowed chords for added colour. The Fm9 provides a smooth transition back to G7.
G7 (G dominant seventh): The G7 chord resolves back to the tonic Cm, creating a sense of resolution.
You can use the C natural minor scale as a foundation for improvisation as well as the C minor pentatonic scale. Also experiment with the Fm Pentatonic Scale.
Happy Playing 🎸
