The Brooklyn-Battery, now known as the Hugh L. Cary Tunnel, was opened in 1950 and connects between Red Hook, Brooklyn and the Battery in Lower Manhattan, with tolls on both ends. The tunnel has survived the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and the flooding caused by the historical storm surges of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when 86 million gallons of water inundated the tunnel's tubes. With a length of 9,117', the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel is the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America.
