It’s time to explore another shade of our palettes in prehistory. Last time I discussed known pigments in the fossil record of avian and non-avian dinosaurs. This time we’ll discuss color, but not a type of color which is produced within any kind of measly cell, I’m going to discuss structural color. The vibrant metallic sheen which amazes the inane, the amazing bejeweled coats which bring tears to the artistically pretentious, and the oily films which passively entertain the brains of cantankerous juveniles. There’s more to the natural world and what we see of it than simply browns, blacks, greys, and reds. How is it that some animals can reflect the might of the sun in dazzling arrays of metallic sheens and hues? Let’s find out shall we?
