One cannot celebrate lemurs without talking about the future of Madagascar and its magical fauna. Lemurs and in fact most of Madagascar’s fauna and flora are incredibly found nowhere else on earth. Madagascar was once home to giant lemurs, the size of gorillas as well as the largest bird that ever lived, the Elephant Bird. Although some of its megafauna has been lost, Madagascar remains a naturalist’s paradise. There is no other viable option to keep the many wonderful remaining lemur species extant, than by supporting ecotourism – without a value placed on live lemurs in their natural habitat, the local population will find it difficult to protect these incredible primates. The good news is that by travelling to this magical island and visiting its nature reserves you are helping to protect it.
