Another weekend, and another chase, this time with 44932 on the South Coast, and two tours from around the Jurassic Coast Line.
The two tours, the Bath and Bristol Christmas Market Express and the Capital Christmas Express were both repeats of last years trips with 34067 Tangmere. The only difference was the power source, this time in the form of Black 5 44932.
To the action, and to Thursday the 25th. Eastleigh was chosen as the first location, however, our cameraman couldn't get here before the train (some 10 minutes early...)
We then move onto a foot crossing just west of Chandlers Ford off of Sutherland's Way. This is behind the fence, and we were NOT trespassing on NR land, as this is a public crossing.
With the train heading to Salisbury, and our cameraman heading to Basingstoke for a lunch, we missed a shot from Salisbury, but then again Salisbury is a horrid place to get to from Southampton.
To the evening then, and due to many different reasons, including light issues, a delayed train, a delayed Steamvideos.net team, and a traffic jam on the M27, we decided to play this safe, and head to the car park at Southampton Airport Parkway (nearly bowled by a Cross Country, slowing down behind a Class 66 on a freight to allow the steamer through Eastleigh).
Parkway is a great location, as it allows us to get onto the M27 very quickly, and get over town...... guess what, we went onto the M27 and got over to Totton, for our final shot of the day.
Moving onto the Saturday, we first wanted to see the Black 5 at both Totton (again) and the Redbridge Causeway. We arrived some 20 minutes early, with me bailing out and going onto the Redbridge Flyover for a view over the tracks, and our second unit at Totton.
Having never been to the Causeway before, I decided to get some practice (OK, a practice pan) before being caught out (less than 30 seconds after I set up the tripod) by a 15 minute early Black 5. As well as that, we got a shot at Totton.
Dashing over town, we made it to Shawford, which is where our opening image is from. The cold winter air and a very healthy Black 5 meant a lot of smoke :)
Sadly we missed the return due to firstly friend commitments, and also a slightly too large desert maybe ruining the tone if I went!!
This will be on Southern Steam 2010, SVN's DVD. We also took several pictures from the day, and these are available online today.
