This Moorish castle and grounds were originally built by the Moors in the 10th century. After the Christians conquered the Moors, they overtook this area and built the Church of Saint Mary (Igreja de Santa Maria do Sesimbra) in 1160. The painted blue tiles (azulejos) were added in the 18th century to depict scenes from Mary's life. What remains of the grounds is the castle wall, a cemetery, and the church. There are spectacular views of Sesimbra and the Atlantic coastline below the castle wall.
