-ENGLISH VERSION-
Lecture given on October 4, 2021, by Gabriel Sterling, who was responsible for the last U.S. presidential election in the U.S. state of Georgia, as part of Democracy Week.
"This has to stop! Someone is going to end up getting hurt, [...] killed. Somebody is going to get shot. This is not okay!"
With these words, Gabriel Sterling, a senior official in the last presidential election in the U.S. state of Georgia, implored Donald Trump to "stop inspiring people to commit potential acts of violence," as he asked to "find" 11,870 Republican votes, in order to change the final results in the state. A Republican himself, Gabriel Sterling asserted himself as the guardian of an assumed democracy, confirming that the vote count in favor of the Democratic Party was accurate. Since then, he has faced political pressure, death threats, and extraordinary media attention.
At this conference, co-organized by the Geneva State Chancellery, the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the University of Geneva, Gabriel Sterling will explain how he came to be at the forefront of an effort to safeguard not only democratic institutions, but also trust in democracy itself.
