France announced Wednesday that it had thwarted a terrorist plot to attack a church after an Algerian man was found with a stash of weapons, ammunition and documents referring to Islamic militant groups.
The suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Sid Ahmed Ghlam, was apprehended by chance by French authorities on Sunday after he called an ambulance saying he had been shot during a robbery at his home in Paris.
"The suspect gave a funny explanation. He said the weapons terrified him, so he wanted to throw them into the Seine. But he shot himself in the thigh due to handling them improperly. Then he decided to bring the weapons to the place where he lives and ask for help," said Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.
The press conference was held after French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced that police on Sunday detained a man suspected of planning an imminent armed attack on churches.
"The suspect has been in contact with a person who is possibly in Syria. They discussed ways to conduct terrorist attacks. The suspect was clearly requested to target churches," said Molins.
An Interior Ministry source said Ghlam is also suspected of being involved in the murder of 32-year-old Aurelie Chatelain who was found dead in her car on Sunday.
