Astrogliosis (also known as astrocytosis or referred to as reactive astrogliosis) is an abnormal increase in the number of astrocytes due to the destruction of nearby neurons from central nervous system (CNS) trauma, infection, ischemia, stroke, autoimmune responses or neurodegenerative disease. Astrogliosis is considered a hallmark of epilepsy and inflammatory changes in the astrocytes can predispose to and facilitate the generation of seizures. Inflammatory activity concomitant to SE results in morphological changes and protein expression alteration in astrocytes. In this video we look into the role of astrogliosis in the pathophysiology of Epilepsy.
