We just watched Dr. Dinee Simpson’s kidney transplant surgery on @youtube - 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 this amazing Black surgeon is our HERO! ⚡️

Our favorite parts:
1. The need for speed: the transplant surgeon must work quickly to minimize tissue death of the donor kidney until blood flow can be reestablished. While watching the video, my 3-year old whispered, “We don’t have to worry about the kidney dying because ours is playdough!” He was sure to remind me of this during our case.
.
2. We also learned that the transplanted kidney makes urine immediately upon vascular anastomosis (blood vessel attachment) - this is so cool, I had to incorporate this as a surprise element during our case 💦
.
Lastly, your friendly neighborhood derm here wants to remind y’all that transplant patients are at increased risk for skin cancer so each should be seen annually for a skin check!
