U.S. to offer COVID-19 booster shots starting September 20, for those who got 2nd dose 8 months earlier

Top health officials in the U.S. have announced that booster shots will be rolled out starting late September to maximize vaccine protection against the virus,... as scientific data shows that efficacy wanes over time.
Though it applies to recipients of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for now,... authorities said those who received Janssen's shot would also be recommended for additional shots.

The U.S. will offer COVID-19 booster shots from late September to maximize vaccine-induced protection and prolong their efficacy.
While urging the unvaccinated to get their shots and wear masks to prevent the Delta variant from spreading,... President Joe Biden during a briefing on Wednesday said the booster shots will be ready in the fall,... pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC Committee.
The remarks came after a joint statement was released by public health and medical experts from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on the administration's plan for COVID-19 booster shots.
"Earlier today, our medical experts announced the plan for booster shots for every fully vaccinated adult Americans. This will boost your immune response and increase your protection from COVID-19. This is the best way to protect ourselves from new variants that could arise."
The country will offer booster shots for all eligible Americans beginning the week of September 20th for those who have seen 8 months elapse since getting their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
Despite admitting that more data needs to be collected,... the statement said those who got the Janssen vaccine will also likely need a booster shot.
The measure comes as scientific data clearly show the effectiveness of vaccines begins to decrease over time following the initial doses,... and in association with the dominance of the Delta variant, it shows reduced protection against mild and moderate disease.
By the time the booster shots are ready in fall,... people who were fully vaccinated during the initial vaccination rollout, including health care providers and nursing home residents will likely be eligible for additional shot.
Regarding voices raising concern over the fact that Americans will get an additional dose while much of the rest of the world remains unvaccinated,... the statement said that the U.S. will expand efforts to increase the supply of vaccines for other countries, adding to the 6-hundred million doses it has already committed to donating globally.
