Crowdfunded comics were started with the 'direct market' comic book stores, buying comics books in advance on a non-returnable basis-- and yes paying for them before they came out. Crowdfunding through Indiegogo is just the latest innovation in the future of comic books, but the future was decided and history was made in the 1970's when the first true crowdfunding for comic book collectors began. Here's my take!
