In this video, you will learn how to save time in the kitchen by using a couple of cooking hacks
Make a plan
Making a plan is probably the most essential part of your meal prep, which is exactly why we created the 5x5 meal plan grid.
You want to know exactly what recipes you're going to cook, how long each one will take and which ingredients you need.
That way you can jump right into the prepping part of your meal prep and you know what to do during your cooking portion.
It's a good idea to make a plan that covers different cooking methods and includes dishes where you do not need to be too actively involved like oven roasting or lentil curry. That way you can use your time while those 2 are cooking to prepare stir-frys, make hummus or prep your own vegan bliss balls or energy balls as snacks.
But without a proper plan in place and just winging it on your meal-prep days, you won't be using your time wisely and will be stressed out during your meal prep.
You should divide your meal prep into 2 separate parts - the preparation and the active cooking period.
That way, you’ll be spending the first half - which will probably be 30 minutes - cutting the veggies and grouping all ingredients for each dish so you can simply spend the next 30 minutes cooking and will be done within 1 hour.
Mise en place
The term “mise en place” is a French term used in professional kitchen setups and literally means "Putting in place".
In terms of your meal prep, this means to have everything set the moment you start cooking.
So your first 30 minutes will be spent to cut the vegetables, measure out the spices and group everything together for each dish, preferably in the exact order as well.
If you know that the first things you will add to your pan are onions and chilies, set them up first and then in the next bowl have your veggies and tofu, then your sauces, spices, herbs etc.
Use all of your kitchen appliances
Now you probably already have a stove, an oven, a blender and it might be a good idea to invest in a rice cooker and a slow cooker, but more on that later.
You can prepare up to 9 meals at the same time when using all of your appliances.
Vary degrees of involvement
Tying in with the previous tip, one of the most important tips is to use a variety of cooking methods with a different degree of active involvement.
Get a rice cooker
The next tip is to get a rice cooker, and this relates to the previous tip. These are super popular in Asia and for a reason. They make cooking rice super easy, the cleaning is simple and you always get the perfect rice.
The good thing about these are that you just set it and forget it, so you can focus on other dishes while the rice is cooking. You just add the rice and water and 20 minutes later, you have perfect rice.
They are super affordable, you can get them online or at most Asian supermarkets for about 30 dollars.
Soak your lentils, beans, legumes, and rice
Soaking your lentils and beans not only helps to reduce the anti-nutrients and improve digestion, but it also drastically reduces the cooking time.
Soaked lentils, beans, and legumes cook up to 40% quicker than dried ones.
Use a mandoline/grater
When you are meal prepping, you have to prepare a lot of vegetables and if you are new to cooking, the cutting can take quite some time.
A mandoline or grater can make your life a lot easier.
You can use it for sweet potato chips, to grate carrots, cabbage or any of your favorite vegetables.
