משה שטרן היה מהחזנים הבולטים והמשפיעים ביותר בזמננו, עם קול עוצמתי שכבש לבבות בכל רחבי העולם היהודי. הוא נולד בבודפשט, הונגריה, למשפחת חזנים, והחל לשיר כבר בגיל צעיר מאוד בהדרכת אביו, ר' ישראל שטרן, שהיה חזן בבית הכנסת "הר ציון" בירושלים. אחיו הגדול, בנימין, היה גם הוא חזן מוכר בבודפשט, כך שתחום החזנות היה טבוע עמוק במסורת המשפחתית.

Moshe Stern was one of the most prominent and influential cantors of our time, with a powerful voice that captured hearts all over the Jewish world. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, to a family of cantors, and began singing at a very young age under the guidance of his father, Rabbi Israel Stern, who was a cantor at the "Mount Zion" Synagogue in Jerusalem. His older brother, Benjamin, was also a well-known cantor in Budapest, so the field of cantorship was deeply embedded in the family tradition.
Already at the age of 7, Stern appeared as a cantor, but World War II interrupted his young career. Despite the horrors of the time, he returned to performing after the war in Hungary and other places in Europe. In one of his exciting performances, at the age of only 12, he performed the prayer "God is full of mercy" at a ceremony in memory of Herzl.
Stern began his official career as a cantor in Israel, first in Ramla and then in the Great Synagogue in Rehovot. In 1958, when the Temple of Solomon Synagogue was established in Jerusalem, he was chosen to serve as the main cantor there, and was recognized for his broad and powerful voice. His prayers attracted a large crowd, until at one point it was necessary to move the prayers to the entrance hall from a large crowd.
In the 1960s he moved to South Africa and served there as a cantor, and then in 1968 he moved to New York and served at Bethel Synagogue in Borough Park, where he became very famous in the Jewish world. There he also stood out thanks to his improvisational style in prayer, which made him an exceptional and appreciated cantor.
Stern returned to Israel in 1977 and settled in Jerusalem. Although he stopped performing regularly in his last twenty years, he continued to leave his mark on the world of singing and performed in concerts and special prayers around the world. He passed away on April 20, 2023 at the age of 87, leaving behind a deep legacy of traditional Ashkenazi singing combined with an innovative and exciting approach to prayers.
Stern was also known for his wide vocal range and his incredible ability to touch the hearts of listeners, and he is still considered one of the greatest singers of the 20th century.
