Abusive relationships often start out with euphoric beginnings. Which is why people are shocked when the violence starts. It can seem like the violence just ‘happens out of nowhere’. But the truth is, there are many reliable warning signs that occur in the early stage of the relationship. The warning signs for abuse are not something that are a part of our education system. And since abuse can be very subtle in the early stages of a relationship, it's easy to miss.
Dating violence, domestic violence & relationship violence all start with control in the early stages. And it’s the escalating levels of control, that increase the level of danger a person is in.
Intimate partner homicide also has many known risk factors, which are covered in this video. The level of stalking that occurs during and/or after a relationship ends, is just one of many risk factors. Stalking is a particularly important factor, because not all relationships that end in homicide were physically violent.
Intimate partner violence is perpetrated by both men & women & effects people of every age, race, religion, class & sexual orientation.
This video uses the example of a female experiencing abuse from a male partner. Although some of the warning signs can be applied to a relationship where a male is being abused by a female, not all of them can.
For example, one of the risk factors for intimate partner homicide, is violence during pregnancy. Non lethal partners will often stop being violent during pregnancy.
