The cloudburst in North Sikkim and the subsequent release of water caused a glacial lake outburst and a significant breach in the Chungthang dam," stated Hem Kumar Chettri, District Collector of Mangan district. "Over 8,000 cubic meters per second of water has been discharged from the Teesta barrage, leading to flood-like conditions in downstream districts such as Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar." Chettri further updated, "We were able to establish contact with Chungthang last night. We learned that the entire town was covered in slush, and machinery is being used to clear it. As of now, there have been no reports of missing individuals from Chungthang, but the damage to property has been extensive. Residents have been relocated to the BOP area. Due to adverse weather conditions, a planned helicopter visit to Lachung and Chungthang may not be possible today. Therefore, we have decided to send a team on foot to assess the situation. One team will reach Chungthang today to provide an accurate assessment.
