Qingming Festival, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on April 4 this year. People usually visit the resting places of their ancestors, sweeping and clearing the site of the tomb and burning “paper-money” as a traditional offering to those who have passed away. It’s a tradition that is carried out by millions of people across the country every year. However, the festival is apparently not without its dangers.
One person, who visited a relative’s tomb to burn “paper money” on a mountain in Chongqing Municipality, inadvertently caused a huge fire on Friday, which swept across the mountainside. Local firefighters, police officers along with members of the public needed two hours to put out the fire. The person has been detained due to negligence. Many people in China have already called for a more environmentally friendly way to observe the festival and follow the traditional rituals.
