Napolitano is making a three-day visit to Paris to try to boost relations between France and Italy and raise discussions about Europe's current economic crisis.
Italian colours lined the Champs-Elysees ahead of his appearance, while schoolchildren waved Italian flags upon his arrival at the Arc de Triomphe.
Napolitano signed the guest book at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, writing "l'hommage d'Italie au soldat Francais", which translates as "a tribute of Italy to the French soldier".
French President Francois Hollande invited Napolitano to Paris when he visited Rome for the first time on 14 June.
Napolitano met with Hollande on Wednesday and gave a speech at France's Parliament, the National Assembly.
