Banbha was a goddess in Irish mythology, one of three sisters—Banbha, Ériu, and Fódla—often regarded as personifications of Ireland itself. She is part of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a mystical race of deities and supernatural beings. Along with her sisters, Banbha played a role in the mythological story of the Milesians, the people who were said to invade Ireland and become its ancestors.
Each sister welcomed the Milesians and asked that Ireland be named in her honor. Though Ériu's name became the most widely used (giving rise to "Éire"), Banbha and Fódla were still remembered as poetic names for the land. Banbha is seen as a symbol of Ireland's enduring spirit and connection to the natural world, her legacy tied to the mystical roots of Irish identity.
