The squat is one of the most natural movements we do as humans. This exercise is a foundational pillar when it comes to lower body training. Wondering about technique?
First. Anchor your feet firmly on to the ground. If you don’t know what that feels like, squat down and tweak your feet until you are comfortable down there. Everyone’s ideal position looks different.
Two. Don’t worry about your arms. Everyone is going to naturally move them in different ways. Just be consistent.
Three. Do not let your body collapse. The descend doesn’t need to take forever, but you want to use a controlled tempo to get a feel for the movement. After some practice, you’ll learn which muscles to contract.
Four. Depth should not be an issue. The cue ‘squat as low as your mobility allows’ serves the purpose of providing a standard range of motion to the exercise. Practicality = it makes the squat repeatable and quantifiable. Everyone’s depth is different. Just make sure that your feet don’t get off the floor.
Five. A slight butt wink is not a big deal when the load is your own bodyweight. Lumbar flexion at the bottom prevents you from keeping your core tight though. It’d be practical to minimize it as you work your way up towards the back-loaded variations.
Six. Push against the floor through the middle of your foot to overcome the resistance.
Finally. Make sure that your knees track the angle of your toes as you come up. Don’t let them cave in. A good cue to ensure proper knee alignment would be to try to externally screw your feet into the ground during the set-up.
