Mig-29 UPG: The "Dragon Slayer"
On Friday, the IAF’s 51 squadron based in Srinagar which was operating Mig-21 Bison had been number plated on Friday. As per recent reports, this squadron is expected to be replaced with Mig-29 Upg. In today's video, we will be discussing why Mig-29 Upg is a natural choice for guarding the northern frontier against China and Pakistan. To understand this better we will have to go little back in history.
During the year 2020, when tension between India & China was at its peaks, the MiG-29 UPGs have been seen conducting a series of sorties from Leh airbase in Ladakh. The fighter jet performed exceedingly well at high altitudes where other fighter jets struggled. The air density at the high altitudes of Ladakh is significantly less. This creates problem for fighter jet's engines as they do not get enough lift undermining their payload capacity. The Chinese fighter jets like J-11 have struggled more due to their heavy weight. Even SU-30 MKI is affected by this phenomenon. Only Rafales and Mig-20 UPG have been able to operate and dominate the high altitude of Himalayas with ease.
