"Now the Celtae dwell beyond the pillars of Heracles..."
— Herodotus (Book II: 33)
Magnus Belenus is one of Theodore Koumartzis' "traveling melodies," originally composed for the ancient lyre in October 2020. A "traveling melody" is a melodic line formed initially by a musician but constantly evolving with creative input from various artists.
It is the first time it is performed with the accompaniment of a fiddle, a medieval musical instrument that emerged in 9th-century Europe. The fiddle, the ancestor of most European bowed instruments, derives from the Byzantine lira, which spread widely in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Byzantine lira, in turn, derives from the ancient lyre, creating this way a multi-millennial connection between these two instruments.
In this version, the song is performed by Calvin Cairns on the fiddle, and Theodore Koumartzis on a LUTHIEROS Lyre of Hermes, masterfully handcrafted in Greece by the Koumartzis family.

🎙️ Who is Calvin Cairns, the Joyful Fiddler?
Calvin is a Canadian folk musician who toured extensively as solo, with various bands and theatre companies in Russia, Europe, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, and from coast to coast across Canada.
Among others, he performed with the Caravan Stage Company, a horse-drawn theatrical troupe, and with the Canadian folk music institution Stringband, fiddling his way from Moose Jaw to Moscow, including performances in Belarus, Boston, and Baker Lake.
Since 2004, his love of music and teaching fiddle has taken him to remote First Nations communities in the far north of Canada. He currently lives, teaches, and performs in Victoria, BC.
"I love collaboration and expanding my musical experiences. It was truly magical to spontaneously explore the realms of the ancient lyre with Theodore Koumartzis.
I am deeply grateful to have met Theodoros, Nikolaos, Lina, Evagoras, and Ioannis. The connection to the ancient lyre music they shared with us in Canada was truly a gift!"
🎙️ Who is Theodore?
Theodore is the youngest brother of the Koumartzis family. Being part of the family's endeavor since its early stage, he soon came to be an inspiring top-notch lyre player, constantly learning and experimenting with musicians around the world.
He is the founder of the PAUSIS Project, a curator at the SEIKILO Museum of Ancient Music in Greece (Thessaloniki), and an integral part of LUTHIEROS Music Instruments.
