Thani Avarthanam Series -
Thani Avarthanam is a segment seen widely in Carnatic music concerts. In layman's terms, a Thani Avarthanam is a conversation between the percussion artists. Thani Avarthanam comprises of percussion solo performances and exchanges which exhibit creative and technical skill. It, generally, follows the main performance in a concert. In presence of multiple percussionists, alternate performances followed by group is the convention.
The percussionists present their solo rounds until they reach a common point and start reducing the avarthanams (rhythmic cycle), a concept known as "koraippu". They finally finish with a "korvai", which is basically a rhythmic pattern that has a prescribed framework and adheres to the underlying taala cycle.
