This talk focuses on introducing 3 fun linguistic features of Bolivian Andean Spanish. This will shed light on the importance of exploring a variety of Spanish dialects, especially those which are still a mystery around the world. The first linguistic feature to be discussed is diminutives. Learn how diminutives are created in Bolivian Andean Spanish to fit in, show politeness, and also have fun with them. The second linguistic feature is the use of definite articles before proper names and its meaning in daily use. The third linguistic feature is the use of borrowings from Aymara, one of the many native languages in Bolivia. Learn some Aymara words and expand your multilingual repertoire.
Monica Flores is the founder of “GoMultilingualBolivia,” a project that aims to promote language and cross-cultural education in Bolivia. She speaks English and French fluently, and her mother tongue is Spanish. She earned a master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from School for International Training as a Fulbright grantee in the United States. She has taught Spanish in France, English for Academic Purposes and Spanish in the United States, and English as a Foreign Language in Bolivia. She has been recipient of four Teaching Awards granted by two of the most prestigious universities in Bolivia.
