These local fighters, deeply motivated by patriotism and religious fervor, leveraged their knowledge of the terrain to conduct ambushes and disrupt French supply lines. Suchet also grappled with the challenge of maintaining discipline and morale among his troops, who were often stretched thin and prone to foraging in hostile territory. Despite these obstacles, Suchet’s meticulous planning, adaptability, and use of local collaborators enabled him to secure key victories, including the capture of Zaragoza in 1809 and later successes that solidified French control in the region
