An explosion at a nickel plant in Indonesia's PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park on Sulawesi Island has resulted in at least 13 fatalities and 46 injuries. The incident occurred during repairs to a smelting furnace, causing a blast that damaged the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel plant in the Bahodopi region. Nine Indonesian and four Chinese workers lost their lives in the explosion. Sulawesi, with significant nickel reserves crucial for electric vehicle batteries, is a focal point for global nickel production. Chinese companies, holding a 50% stake in PT IMIP, have substantial investments in Indonesian industries. The blast, attributed to the contact between residual slag in the furnace and flammable materials during repairs, prompted a four-hour firefighting effort and facility evacuation. The tragedy marks the third fatal incident this year at Chinese-owned nickel plants in Indonesia. Prior incidents involved worker riots in January and a waste disposal site collapse in April. Before this recent disaster, the Mining Advocacy Network had recorded 22 worker deaths at Sulawesi nickel plants since 2019. The company expressed regret and pledged cooperation with authorities for a thorough investigation.
