Brown Neurosurgery Grand Rounds 11/22
Dr. Shao is a PGY-5 Brown Neurosurgery Resident who rotated on the Pediatric Neurosurgery Charity Service at Philippines General Hospital in Manila, the largest government hospital in the Philippines and the sole tertiary referral center for charity neurosurgical care in the country. This rotation took her through the wards, OR, clinic, and lab, where she was able to participate in pediatric neurosurgical cases and host a telementored resident cadaver workshop on selective dorsal rhizotomy. Dr. Shao will share valuable lessons learned from adapting to the practice of neurosurgery well outside of her Brown Neurosurgery natural habitat, and cases encountered in the realms of dysraphism, brain tumor, congenital, functional, infectious, spinal, and trauma neurosurgery.
As a guest of the gracious Filipino neurosurgeons during this rotation, Dr. Shao expresses thanks to mentors for this experience: pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ronnie E Baticulon and PGH Hospital Director Dr. Gap Legaspi. She is also thankful to her US-based mentors throughout the rotation, including faculty of the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery: Drs. Philip Aldana, Ariana Barkley, Patricia Quebada-Clerkin; and local Brown faculty mentor Petra M. Klinge.
