We walk through a recent build we did to follow nightly builds of TrueNAS Core, the ZFS NAS operating system that will be the next iteration of FreeNAS. We wanted to build a server in the SilverStone CS381 8-bay chassis and worked through a number of different mATX motherboard and CPU options until we found a few that made sense and several that would not work for one reason or another.
This is a build that you likely will not want to emulate, but we just wanted to share some of the thought process behind the different options we cycled through. In the end, we have an 8-bay ZFS NAS that installed and runs TrueNAS Core perfectly well out-of-the-box which was welcome.
