Abu Mohammed al-Joulani, born Ahmed Hussein al-Shar’a, rose to prominence as the leader of Al-Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda's Syrian branch, during the Syrian Civil War. Starting his militant career in Iraq, he returned to Syria in 2011 to fight against Bashar al-Assad. In 2016, he rebranded his group as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), distancing it from global jihadist ties to gain local legitimacy. While al-Joulani now portrays himself as a moderate leader advocating inclusivity, doubts remain about his true intentions—whether he seeks peace and unity or simply a strategic power consolidation.
