Ankur Samanta talks about The Holodeck Initiative and how they implemented the world's first, live, transatlantic 3D holographic video call, presented at SID Display Week 2022.

The Holodeck Initiative is a joint collaboration between the R42 Institute and VividQ, with a fundamental purpose of developing human and holographic projection interaction and advanced 3D imaging technology while also developing the holography application space. They were the first in the world to implement the live streaming of true 3D data worldwide and use it to facilitate live 3D holographic conferencing, demoed between Palo Alto, Toronto, and Cambridge. They were able to do so using just a smartphone on the data capture end, making it possible for just about anyone to connect to a holographic projector remotely and have a 3D holographic rendition of themselves be projected in real time.
