In this video we perform the first post-hardening pruning or hedge pruning of Japanese maples followed by partial defoliation. We experiment with different levels of partial defoliation and techniques (removing entire leaves or cutting each leaf). The idea being that the decrease in photosynthetic surface and removal of auxin with the pruning of the growing tips will force the tree to push a second flush of internal ramification. As the defoliation is only partial, if successful, will allow us to perform it again when the second post-hardening pruning is carried out in about 6 weeks. Fertilization is strong now to provide the required nutrients for a strong second flush. #Bonsai #EvolutionBonsai #CanadianBonsai
