Twenty-eight illegal miners, who are part of the 153 miners brought to the surface from a disused mine shaft in Sabie, Mpumalanga, have been remanded in custody.
The group of miners amongst them Zimbabwe nationals appeared briefly in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court.
The illegal miners were brought to the surface in an elaborate operation that lasted three days.
They are charged with contravening the Immigration Act. Their case has been postponed to January 27 for the social worker's assessment.
