The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) (formerly DeitY) on October 3, 2012 notified the "Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Mandatory Registration Requirement) Order, 2012" for fifteen categories of electronic articles. MeitY added fifteen more product categories to this order on November 13, 2014. On October 24, 2016, MeitY also notified Indian Standard for "Indian Language Support for Mobile Phones". MeitY added another thirteen product categories to this order on August 23, 2017.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has notified five products under the Solar Photovoltaic Energy Goods, Systems, Equipment and Components (Requirements for Mandatory Registration) Regulations 2017 of 5 September 2017.
Pursuant to the Orders, no person shall manufacture or store for sale, import, sell or distribute goods that do not conform to the Indian Standard specified in the Order and that do not bear the standard mark with a unique registration number obtained from BIS.
The Bureau of Indian Standards licenses manufacturers to use or apply the standard mark with a unique R number through registration based on a self-declaration of conformity of goods and articles to Indian Standards. Licensing and operation under the mandatory registration scheme is in accordance with the Conformity Assessment Scheme under Scheme - II of Annex - II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.
