In the case of anterior epistaxis when bleeding continues actively even after nose pinching for 5 minutes and a bleeding point not visualized, anterior nasal packing should be done. for this, a ribbon gauze or cotton dressing is used which should be soaked/ dipped either with polyfax , liquid paraffin, vaseline or acriflavine (it should not be dry). The dressing should not be held from the edge but a little apart and is inserted in horizontal layers along the floor of each nasal cavity from anterior to posterior (as far backward possible) and then the whole nasal cavity should be packed tightly.
The pack is usually placed for at least a day and should not remain there for more than 2-3 days. after packing always start with systemic antibiotics to prevent sinus infection and most importantly from Toxic shock syndrome.
Another quick way of doing anterior nasal packing is to insert a merocel and instill nasal drops or saline to inflate it
