STORYLINE:

A roadside bomb targeted a convoy carrying American police trainers in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Wednesday, killing two US civilians and seriously wounding a third, officials said.

Texas-based security contractor DynCorp International confirmed that two of its employees, who were assisting with Iraqi police training, were killed in the attack.

A spokesman Gregory Lagana for DynCorp confirmed the two men were DynCorp employees who were involved in the training of Iraqi police and said both men were American.

He said they were awaiting a full report on the incident.

In a separate statement, the US Embassy said that coalition forces cordoned off the scene of the attack, which occurred early afternoon, and the wounded were taken to a hospital.

It also said two Americans were killed, and said a third was seriously wounded.

"The US Embassy condemns this act of terror and offers its condolences to the families of the victims," the statement read.

It said next of kin were being notified.
