Wayang Kulit is the Malay expresion for Shadow Puppet Theatre. Dalang (story teller) or puppet master Made Gender is a native Ubudian who performs Wayang Kulit almost nightly at his own Shadow Puppet Theatre, named Kerta, located in the heart of Ubud. As a dancer he performs often at the stage of Ubud Palace, as well he is performing at temples for religious purposes. Wayang Kulit is often performed at ceremonies, in village temples and in private houses for funerals. Actually the performance of Wayang Kulit is not always for humans but to the deceased to entertain their souls before reaching heaven. The puppet master (dalang) must be an overall artist. He must be skilfull in several disciplines of arts. First at all should have deeply knowledge about the stories of Ramayana as well as Mahabharata and knowing perfectly the characters of wayang figures. Must have a good and clear voice, as he has to imitate about 50 wayang figures with different voices. And he has also to perfectly master the Balinese language "high" and "ordinary" -according to every character- used in dialogue, song and narration. He has to be a good singer too, as he should sing a lot during the performances. The dalang master also has to know perfectly the gamelan (Balinese musical instruments) used to accompany the show. He is the conductor and the command for the gamelan music. The one who tell musicians when they should begin and stop, and also telling the gamelan crew what kind of music to be played. And probably most important, he has to be skillful to move the puppets attractively. And has to have the ability to make good jokes at the very exactly moment of the show to please the audience. By minute 06:24 master I Made Gender give way to I Ketut Pasek, a tremendous dalang full of energy and character. Ketut Pasek comes from Mawang village, near Lodtunduh, about 8 kms south of Ubud. Ketut Pasek has the capacity to transmit full life to coloured buffalo skin puppets.
