I love this quiet and gentle interpretation and have been thinking for a while about whether and how I could use it for one of my Outlander videos. The most obvious choice would have been to focus on their separation. However, I found it more appealing to work with footage from almost all seasons, but especially the current season 7b. Firstly because we all had to wait a long time for 7b, and secondly because it was a bigger challenge. The song thrives on understatements "... I get a little bit lonely/tired/nervous/terrified..." and I had to think about how to make the lyrics believable, because the news of Jamie's supposed death was to be the framework for the video.
Claire's reaction to this and her emotions are of course not "a little bit", but so big and painful that she almost put an end to her life. The same goes for the other traumatic experiences I dealt with in the video, like their breakup, Malva's accusations and their aftermath, Claire's mental trauma after her kidnapping and rape, the loss of Brianna, Roger and the kids. None of this is a small thing. The idea arose to portray these experiences as memories, but with the distorted view of someone who has just received shattering news that they neither want to believe nor can process. Claire remembers everything they have experienced and overcome together. They have been through so much. She felt a little lonely a long time ago, in another life, but that was long gone because Jamie was with her again. She was a little bit nervous about whether the best of all these years might have gone, whether Jamie might really be attracted to a younger woman, but that didn't come between them either. How often she was a little bit terrified, but always found security and stability in Jamie. Looking back, all this seemed like trifles as long as Jamie was by her side. Her clouded mind led her to believe that they would overcome this situation too, until the realization hit that Jamie was no longer there to catch, comfort and protect her, never again. He would never love her again. This is the moment of the total eclipse of her heart. And she wallows in this darkness and the memories, bittersweet and painful, in the moment when she needs him the most and he can no longer stand by her.
As it is a duet, it opened up the possibility of interpreting the second half from Jamie's point of view, with his reaction and emotions when he learns that Claire and John have had sex. Jealousy, anger and pain at the feeling of having been cheated on and betrayed darken his heart. Uncertainty about how and why. Interestingly, the darkness has already left Claire's heart at this point. The light, her elixir of life, has returned to her life. But what is a return to light for her is the beginning of darkness for Jamie.
You know that I like to give my videos a happy ending. I just don't like the idea of leaving my viewers with a sad or heavy heart. And so I end this video with the certainty that there is nothing that can come between our two heroes. That there is nothing that their love cannot endure, that they cannot overcome together. The ability to show understanding for the other, to take their feelings, fears and needs seriously, to love, accept and respect the other as an independent person is just as essential as the never-ending passion and desire for each other.
