When a child is born it’s normally a time of joy, but in as many as 20% of mothers AND fathers, it can result in something unexpected. Depression. It usually occurs soon after birth and can be a difficult problem for the parents.
What are the symptoms of postpartum depression? They include: severe mood swings, irritability, loss of appetite, lack of joy in life, withdrawal from family and friends, and even thoughts of harming the baby. The symptoms start in the first few months after childbirth and can happen up to the first year postpartum.
Who is at risk for having postpartum depression? If you have a history of depression (or postpartum depression) you’re at a high risk. If you’ve experienced financial problems or other stressful events lately, you may be at higher risk. If you’re having difficulty in the relationship with your partner, or the pregnancy is unwanted, postpartum depression is more likely.
How is a diagnosis made of this condition? There are criteria created by the American Psychiatric Association to diagnose the disorder by your physician. A blood test is preformed to rule out other causes.
