The area where the cemetery is now once was a training camp and POW camp during the Civil War. Located 2.5 miles east of Interstate 55 outside Springfield (and Riverton), Illinois, Camp Butler National Cemetery has a lot of history to tell. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 15, 1997 (#97000891).
