All primary and secondary school students will no longer sit for mid-year examinations by 2023, as part of efforts to reduce an overemphasis on grades. Currently, only certain levels are exempt from these assessments. Currently, 59 secondary schools offer full subject-based banding, which will eventually replace streaming. By 2023, more than two thirds of schools will be on the list. As more schools introduce full subject-based banding, Mother Tongue Language 'B', which is offered to students who are weaker in the subject, will be discontinued.
