Simon Dodds (Heart of England Foundation Trust) explains how FISH (Foundations of Improvement Science in Healthcare), helps us manage patient flow in healthcare.
"FISH is based on a design paradigm, which means you start with the purpose of the process - for example, you might ask 'How do I know I'm doing a good job?' or 'What would a good job look like?' and then you design to that purpose. So you create a fit-for-purpose design. The second part is that FISH uses time series data and that's how we know we're doing a good job. FISH helps us manage flow because it is design to identify the design flaws in the current system which impede flow by understanding those flaws and improving them or re-moving them - then flow follows."
