Inmates climbed onto the roof of San Vittore prison in Milan on Monday as coronavirus restrictions sparked protests in prisons across Italy. Italian police patrolled the perimeter of the prison, and firefighters used cranes to try to make contact with the protesters. The government has accused the government of abandoning the prison system, refusing to provide sufficient measures to prevent the spread of the virus among inmates and leaving guards on their own to deal with prisoners. More than two dozen riots have taken place at Italy’s overcrowded lock-ups since Sunday.
