Located in the northern district of Israel this city lies in the Beit Shehan Valley Under Roman rule it became the leading city of the Decapolis which was a league of ten cities including Damascus in the northeast of ancient Palestine and served as the capital of the province of Palestina Secunda The population during this time was a mix of Christians pagans Jews and Samaritans However after a series of devastating earthquakes most notably in 749 the city lost its prominence Today Beit Shehan serves as a regional center for the towns in the Beit Shehan Valley The town has always been strategically significant controlling access from Jordan and the inland to the coast as well as from Jerusalem and Jericho to the Galilee
