This week, we complete our mini tour of Yorkshire with a visit to the popular seaside town of Whitby. Famous for offering the UK's best fish and chips, we put that claim to the test with a traditional lunch on the harbour wall. Beforehand, we explore Whitby's connections to Bram Stoker and the Dracula novels. Later, we discover Whitby's close ties to Captain Cook, and whaling, thankfully now outlawed in Britain.
Whitby, located on the east coast of England, is a charming coastal town that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and stunning scenery. It's a place where old-world charm meets modern convenience, and where you can enjoy some of the best fish and chips in the country.
One of the town's most famous attractions is its association with Captain Cook, the famous British explorer who began his seafaring career here. Whitby is proud of its links to Captain Cook and his voyages, and there are several places around town where you can learn more about his life and adventures.
When you first arrive in Whitby, one of the things you'll notice is the beautiful harbour, which is home to a bustling fishing industry. It's the perfect spot to take a stroll and soak up the sights and sounds of the sea, and to watch the local fishing boats coming in with their daily catch.
Of course, no visit to Whitby is complete without trying some of the famous fish and chips. There are plenty of places to choose from, but one of the most popular is Quayside, which has been serving up delicious seafood since 1968.
After lunch, it's time to explore some of the town's other attractions. One of the must-see sights is the ruined abbey that stands high above the town, overlooking the sea. The abbey has a fascinating history and has been the inspiration for many works of art and literature over the years.
For those who love the great outdoors, Whitby has plenty to offer. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and there are plenty of walking and cycling trails to explore. The nearby North York Moors National Park is also well worth a visit, with its rugged landscapes, pretty villages, and abundant wildlife.
As the day draws to a close, there's still time to enjoy a stroll along the beach and watch the sunset over the sea. With its picturesque harbour, historic buildings, and friendly locals, Whitby is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in a slower pace of living.
In summary, a visit to Whitby is a truly unforgettable experience. From the delicious fish and chips to the fascinating history and stunning scenery, there's something here for everyone. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, Whitby is the perfect destination.
