In the ravaged landscape of post-war America, three men found themselves bound together by fate, friendship, and the unyielding desire for freedom. Siegfried, Hocker, and the narrator, once brothers in arms, now stood at the precipice of a new era, one that promised uncertainty, upheaval, and the daunting task of rebuilding. As the sun rose over the dusty horizon of Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, the trio prepared to embark on a journey that would test the very fabric of their bond. The year was 1945, and the world was still reeling from the aftershocks of war. The Allies had emerged victorious, but at what cost? The once-mighty German army lay in tatters, its soldiers scattered across the globe, forced to confront the harsh realities of defeat. In this tumultuous landscape, our three protagonists found themselves at a crossroads. Hocker, the stalwart and dependable friend, remained behind, a constant presence in a world turned upside down. Siegfried and the narrator, on the other hand, were destined for parts unknown, their fate a mystery waiting to be unraveled. As they boarded the train, a sense of trepidation hung in the air. What lay ahead? Would they find solace in the unfamiliar landscapes of America, or would they remain forever lost, adrift in a sea of uncertainty? The journey ahead promised to be long and arduous, but for Siegfried and the narrator, there was no turning back. The die had been cast, and their fate was now inextricably linked to the whims of a capricious destiny. And so, as the train rumbled out of the station, carrying its cargo of weary soldiers into the unknown, our story begins. A tale of friendship, perseverance, and the unyielding human spirit, forged in the crucible of war and tempered by the fires of adversity. Join us on this epic journey, as we delve into the hearts and minds of three men, forever bound together by the shared experience of war, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship.
Seconds later, our clothes are tossed into sacks and sent off to be disinfected. The only things we get to keep are our leather boots, which we carry with us into the shower room. The Americans have things well organized, and we don't think twice about it until after we've showered, dried off, been sprayed with disinfectant powder, checked for skin diseases, weighed, measured, and put back into our damp clothes. Then we're herded into a large room with the rest of our group. But there's no time to rest. The wall behind us slides open, and we make our way down the ninety-foot hallway. We line up in rows, fifteen feet apart, and head out of the room. As we turn the corner, we see a line of guards standing with their backs to the water.
