The federal hate crimes trial of the three Georgia men convicted of Ahmaud Arbery's murder is underway.
Today, opening statements began in the trial of Travis and Gregory McMichael and their neighbor William Bryan.
The state trial did not focus on race, but the federal hate trial will. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bobbi Bernstein told the jurors the case "does not require proof of hate," but they will prove the three white men acted "because of race."
They all are charged with interference with rights and attempted kidnapping.
The McMichael's also faces a weapons charge.
The three men are currently serving life sentences from their state murder convictions.
