Kings Park Psych Center in Long Island, New York was a psychiatric hospital that operated from 1885 to 1996. It was originally known as Kings County Asylum because it was first used to take on patients from the overcrowded asylums in Kings County (Brooklyn).
Originally meant to differentiate itself from the stigma of overcrowded asylums, it eventually fell victim to the same overcrowding and human rights abuses it sought to avoid. The hospital grew upward instead of outward, and by 1954, lobotomies and electroshock therapy were a regular practice as the patient census climbed almost to 10,000.
Since the year 2000, plans for the area have come and gone, and a few smaller buildings have been demolished but most of the original structures remaining standing. Local artists have made their mark all over the property. One day these building may not be here, but the image of it will live on here.
