Computer Science undergraduates at Cambridge University undertake a group design project as part of their second-year practical work. New product prototypes are created for external clients over an intensive 7 week period. This course is designed to give students experience of working with a team of colleagues using externally prescribed tools. This gives some idea of the problems encountered in normal professional practice. In the final week of term, teams present their work to students, members of the Department and guests. Department staff vote for the best project, and each member of the winning team receives a cash prize, in 2014 sponsored by JPMorgan and IBM.
