Government forces take Mt Vlasic from Serb separatists
Bosnian government forces on Friday (24/3) scored a major victory
against Serb separatists in central Bosnia. Government troops reportedly seized control of a strategic communications tower on Mount Vlasic, just north of Travnik. The tower served as a crucial communications link between Serb territories in western and southern Bosnia. Government forces also closed in on another communications tower in the Majevica mountains near the government stronghold of Tuzla in northeast Bosnia. President Alija Izetbegovic meanwhile, rejected U.N. claims that his troops initiated the battle in northeastern Bosnia. He said they only began an offensive after a massive Bosnian Serb attack on the town of Tuzla. Izetbegovic said the New Year's Eve cessation of hostilities agreement remains in effect as long as the Bosnian Serbs "respect it". His accounts differed sharply from U.N. reports that the Bosnian Serbs shelled the Bosnian government main military barracks only after the government launched an infantry attack on Serb positions in the Majevica Mountains. At a news conference, Izetbegovic also told reporters his government is
demanding some major changes in the way U.N. peacekeepers operate in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He said the peacekeepers should be able to protect U.N.-declared "safe areas" and deliver humanitarian aid across Bosnia.
