One in every 100,000 children born in Uganda is born with a cleft - a gap in the upper lip or palate or both. This congenital condition is treatable yet a majority of the patients do not get the treatment that they desperately need - many times because they cannot afford it.
As a result such children are often condemned to a life of isolation and stigma because many in society do not understand this anomaly. In this week’s segment of Health focus, Gertrude Tumusiime Uwitware looks at how children with clefts are getting their smiles back by a simple surgical procedure that’s now available free of charge in a number of health facilities in the country.
